ESTER
- Ester is a compound that contains carboxylate group (functional group)
- Physical properties:
- sweet/pleasant smell
- volatile
- low boiling point
- insoluble in water
- Ester can be produced from the reaction between carboxylic acid & alcohol.
- Example: ethanol + propanoic acid --> ethyl propanoate + water
- Uses of ester:
- making artificial flavours and essences. These are used in cold drinks, ice-creams, sweets and perfumes.
- solvents for oils, fats, gums, resins, cellulose, paints, varnishes, etc
- plasticizers
