ESTERIFICATION PROCESS





ESTER

  • Ester is a compound that contains carboxylate group (functional group)

  • Physical properties:
  1. sweet/pleasant smell
  2. volatile
  3. low boiling point
  4. insoluble in water
  • Ester can be produced from the reaction between carboxylic acid & alcohol.
  • Example: ethanol + propanoic acid --> ethyl propanoate + water
  • Uses of ester:
  1. making artificial flavours and essences. These are used in cold drinks, ice-creams, sweets and perfumes.
  2. solvents for oils, fats, gums, resins, cellulose, paints, varnishes, etc
  3. plasticizers
